Summary:
We are given a brief introduction to Pathways Soteria House in Vermont, which offers a safe, supportive community for people experiencing psychosis for the first time. The Greek word soteria means safety, salvation, and deliverence. The place is run as a home where there are no titles, medications, or diagnoses. The goal is to support people to find their own way, as well as to promote a different interpretation and approach to what we refer to as mental health challenges.
We meet young people who say that the feeling of isolation and lack of contact with both themselves and others became less frightening in this community. By discovering that strange experiences were a normal way of processing extraordinary experiences, courage and hope for the future were opened up. At Pathways Soteria, they made friends for life and got the support they needed to understand the world anew. We gain insight into a community that emphasizes creative processes, contact with nature and animals, healthy eating, and without giving directives on how to live a good life.
